The shed

The shed at Long Rock was build in 1914 to replace a much smaller one near the station. This 1960's photo shows (from left to right) 6824 Ashley Grange , 4920 Dumbledon Hall, 6828 Trellech Grange and 6988 Swithland Hall. The four-road shed also has a large single-road heavy maintenance facility along the far side. The other two structures along the rear are the power plant and pumping station. The tall square chimney is part of the sand furnace.

My model version has a bit less detail, though I've tried to capture the essence of the prototype. As I have no model grange locomotives, the lineup here is Broome Manor, Hagley Hall, Castle class Isabard Kingdom Brunel and Saint class Princess Beatrice. The sand shed has yet to be built. The background image is very temporary - mainly just for this photo. As with the station, all ballasting and other scenery is waiting for a move of the layout to a new location. (See construction page.)

The Coaling Stage

The coaling stage was a whole new concept for me. I was used to the typical US concrete or wooden coaling towers with an internal conveyor to bring coal to an upper bin. The Great Western style was quite different, with coal wagons being pushed to the upper level by a shunter, and the coal manually loaded onto little carts and wheeled to the opening above the tender on the locomotive being fueled. The large section on the top with the corrugated roof is a water tank.
