Penzance Station

The station at Penzance is a four-platform terminus with 3 of them under a great train shed. This photo show the station in the early 60's with the County of Bucks heading the 4.45 to Manchester. Also shown is a DMU on platform 4 as an 08 Shunter works the produce goods shed.

This is my version, with a great deal of work yet to do. I have managed to come somewhat close to what's shown in the prototype. Here it's the County of Somerset heading the Manchester train with quite a few less coaches. The DMU and 08 shunter are there. Landscaping will come once the entire layout gets moved to a new location. I'm still pondering the best way to construct the roof of the train shed, thus it's still wide open. It needs to be easily removable.(See construction page.)

The real station can hold quite long trains, whereas my model version has to be severely compressed. At the end of platform 1, the original booking hall was up a magnificant flight of stairs. This was closed in the 80's with a new travel office located on the main level. However, as my model represents the 50's, the stairway is open and the booking office ready for business.

The main goods shed was relocated from an area next to the station to a new location in Ponsendane (about a mile up the main line) in the 1930's. A small part of the original was left in operation until the 1980's mainly to handle milk and produce. So, my model has this small one. Unfortunately, space simply wouldn't permit modelling the newer one.
